Since my oldest is getting close to driving age and we have access to an old truck and quiet country roads, this is the perfect opportunity to teach my daughter how to drive stick the truck is an early ‘90s Nissan “hardbody” with a manual transmission, manual windows, and no power steering. It’s perfect for learning things the old- school way.

We went out for a lesson this afternoon. She made all the common mistakes - not enough gas, too much gas, releasing the clutch too quickly, releasing it to slowly, and not turning at the right rate. We must have done fifty starts from a dead stop, most of them on hills. She only killed it three times. She still has a long way to go, but she’s progressing well.

When we finally pulled back into the driveway, she said that she really likes the old truck. It really surprised me. She may be a gear head after all.

Nice! I learned on my friend rusty ol’ ‘90 S10 with manual everything and the rare radio delete option.

Sounds like the old Nissan I “learned” to drive stick on. My dad a stripped out 85 with power nothing and no radio.

Same here except an aftermarket radio. That doesn't work right most of the time, so we just leave it turned off.

I’m pretty sure there’s a Country song that covers this exact situation.

You're probably right.

You should look in Oklahoma. I’ve seen a bunch of them here. There are a couple of decent ones on Craigslist in the OKC area right now

The first thing my dad did was go to Radio shack and pick a radio and give elementary school me a crash course in wiring.

Awesome!

When I tuned 16 (‘97), the local Nissan dealer was advertising brand new stripped down Hardbodies for $8400. Of course I had neither $8400, nor the ability to get a loan.

At that age I wanted something a bit older. I wanted a ‘69 Mustang or Cougar. I also had my eye on a Fiat spyder. Like you, I was stuck without funding or financing options. I'd still love to have one of those three cars.

If I could’ve picked anything, it would’ve been a ‘70 Chevelle.

Ha - I had one just like that, (except Charcoal grey.) 1990, short box standard cab, 5sp manual, cheap mudflaps, even had the chrome rings on the wheels...

There's a grey one for sale locally if you want to relive your youth. Just saying....
